PRP/PRF
PRP/PRF
Platelets are cells found in the blood whose main function is to form blood clots. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) contain high concentrations of platelets and growth factors. PRP and PRF can be gathered, isolated, and used from the patient’s very own blood. At our office, this is performed while the patient is sitting in the chair. A small amount of blood is drawn into a tube where it is then spun in a centrifuge machine for a short period of time. The centrifuge spins the blood quickly causing the platelets and growth factors to separate from the red blood cells. The tube is then opened, and the dentist will use the PRP and PRF products during surgery.
This technique helps the patient heal faster, reduces the risk for infection, and reduces pain after surgery. In addition, it is a superior product since it comes directly from the patient rather than manufactured. There is no concern of disease transmission. When used in combination with bone grafts, it aids in quicker bone formation.
If you have a condition that prevents your blood from clotting, then PRP and PRF therapy may not be an option for you.
